Pain management and suppression through prescription opioids and pharmaceuticals seem to cause as many problems as they are used to solve.

And yet, none of us can live a full life in constant pain, nor can we bear to see others suffering. The alleviation of pain is one of the primary uses and most potent super powers of CBD (in its many forms).

The now abundant evidence for CBD offering a strong benefit for health and well-being, in addition to its high safety profile and non-addictive nature, has resulted in CBD becoming a desirable alternative for pain management and control.

When consumed in sublingual form (under the tongue), CBD tends to stay active over a longer period of time. It can also provide relief and support with anxiety, arthritis, inflammation, nausea, appetite loss, stress and insomnia. In one study, an oral spray consisting of a 1:1 combination THC and CBD produced peak blood levels of CBD at 3.6 hours for a 5 mg dose of CBD and 4.5 hours for a 15 mg dose of CBD. Holding the spray in your mouth for at least 30 seconds (up to 2 minutes) before swallowing seems to optimize the effect.

When assessing oral CBD sprays, researchers also found that the total amount of absorbed CBD increases fivefold if the person had recently eaten. By increasing blood flow to your mouth, chewing helps speed up absorption.

A 2014 review from the European Journal of Pharmacology established the potential of cannabis to limit or prevent nausea and vomiting from a wide range of causes. A 2011 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology showed that, as an antiemetic (preventing nausea), CBD might help reduce nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy.

The research keeps budding. Over the past few decades, researchers have studied appetite stimulation by cannabinoids – particularly in relation to

weight loss and malnutrition associated with cancer, HIV/AIDS and anorexia nervosa. A study on the relationship between cannabinoids and food intake suggests that endocannabinoids could impact energy balance and food intake within the brain. Deeper research is needed to understand the full effects of CBD on appetite, but it’s looking optimistic.

With chronic pain, no single panacea that works equally for everyone has emerged, but the evidence in support of CBD as a component of a treatment regimen, or as a replacement for pharmaceutical and opioid pain relief treatment seems irrefutable, just as the anecdotal evidence from patients using CBD to enhance quality of life is almost unwaveringly positive.
