While we’ve had to adapt and adjust in many ways this year, the pandemic doesn’t mean Halloween is cancelled. If you’re an adult who loves Halloween, you can still safely partake in the fun – ideally with costumes, celebratory rituals and cannabis.

A Brief Halloween History

Fun fact: did you know Canada was the first North American country to start celebrating Halloween?

October 31st marks the eve of the feast of All Hallows Day (aka All Saints Day), the Christian holiday honouring the deceased. On All Hallows Eve, the “veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead was thin.” According to historical folklore, the souls of the dead would come back to earth and walk among the living. People would leave out food and candies for the dead, in the hope that evil spirits would leave them alone. They would also carve out turnips and rutabagas, and place embers in them to ward off evil spirits (the modern day jack-o-lantern).

Some believe our contemporary Halloween celebration is based on Celtic traditions. The Gaelic festival of Samhain (pronounced saah-win or saah-ween), meaning “Summer’s End”, is thought to be a potential origin. It was a celebration of harvesting crops before the harsh northern European winter. People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Nicknamed the “Witch’s New Year”, Samhain is a time-honoured tradition followed by Wiccans, ancient druids and modern pagans across the world.

Today, Halloween has evolved into a tradition of spooky celebration, pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating and creative costuming. Halloween is also a perfect time to light it up and explore deeper psycho-spiritual realms. Mota’s Zoomie Zombies will fit right in.

When it comes to cannabis, Halloween is primed for entering a mind-altered state. The vibe is usually spooky, thrilling and mysterious. Cannabis can definitely enhance your experience – especially if you and your “bubble” get serious with costumes (as long as they’re not too terrifying).

How to elevate your Halloween in quarantine:

  • Host a small cannabis-themed Halloween party with responsibly served cannabis edibles (toothpicks are great). Just ensure these treats are portioned out and clearly marked as “special”.
  • Connect virtually with your Halloween gang after you’ve all dipped in to your favourite cannabis treat at home.
  • Netflix and chill on your own with Halloween-themed movies and a personal serving of Trick-or-Treat Jellies.
  • Light some candles, put on a haunting playlist and do a Tarot card reading. This activity pairs well with Scaryeos.
  • Make a fall-inspired craft, like splatter-painting pumpkins and gourds. Even more fun after you’ve had a few tokes.
  • Create your own witchy ritual and mellow out with a THC/CBD bath bomb.
  • ‘Spook’ your joint with Ghost Train Haze or your preferred strain.

Most importantly…have a happy, safe and spooky Halloween!
