We’ve all felt the burn. Long-distance running, interval training at the gym, hiking up a flight of stairs…lately, it may look more like bedroom wall squats, Zoom pilates and YouTube yoga. We feel you.
While daily movement and physical activity are integral to our overall health and well-being, the aftermath can be a bummer (especially when the glutes are on fire).
Nutrition, supplements and proper stretching can all contribute to enhanced performance and recovery. But sometimes we need a therapeutic remedy that rivals Tiger Balm and ice baths. The emergence of CBD in fitness and sport performance has been a literal game changer.
Some studies have shown that cannabis is effective in reducing pain, including musculoskeletal pain from exercise and stiff joints. More research is needed here, however CBD does appear to relieve pain effectively for many athletes.
CBD has also been shown to lower inflammation. After a hard workout, CBD binds to CB2 receptors in immune tissues, which can actually help dial down the inflammatory response.
Interestingly, in 2018 the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances (in or out of competition). However, only CBD was removed from the prohibited list. The psychoactive component of marijuana, THC, is still prohibited in competition, as well as synthetic cannabinoids. While this is still considered a grey area, CBD could offer many professional athletes a respite from addictive medications and painful recoveries.
Regardless of fitness level, we can all benefit from CBD in our cooldown practice.
